New Delhi: A woman who was paralyzed with fear of catching COVID-19 spent the past three years inside her home with her son in south west Delhi, police said.

Munmun Majhi has shut herself up with her 10-year-old son in their house in Gurugram’s Chakkarpur since 2020 after the first lockdown.

Their wretched situation came to light when Munmun Majhi’s husband Sujan Majhi, who is an engineer with a private company, approached police for help, NDTV reported.

A team of health officials, child welfare department officials and police broke open the main door to the house on Tuesday, bringing out mother and the son.

The house was in complete disarray with a pile of clothes, hair, garbage, dirt and groceries strewn around.

The woman cooked on an induction stove, leaving the garbage indoors, and she cut the child’s and her own hair which she left around.

The child scribbled the walls of house with pencils and they had not seen the sun for the past three years, according to the report.

No relatives visited them for all the while even as the neighbours had no clue of what was happening in the house.

The woman believed that her son would die of Covid 19 if she stepped outside the house.

She feared the virus so much so that she did not allow her husband into the house, who stayed in touch with his family through video calls.

Sujan Majhi paid rent, electricity bills and left food materials outside the main door. After the rescue, the mother and son were taken to the civil hospital.
