New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday announced the completion of preparations for the upcoming Vice Presidential election, including the finalisation of the updated Electoral College list in accordance with constitutional and legal provisions.

In an official press note, the Commission stated that the Electoral College list has been prepared as per Article 324 of the Constitution, which empowers the ECI to conduct elections for the office of the Vice President. Under Article 66(1), the Vice President is elected by an Electoral College comprising members from both Houses of Parliament, including elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, and elected members of the Lok Sabha.

The Commission confirmed that the latest list of eligible voters has been compiled and maintained as mandated under Rule 40 of the Presidential and Vice Presidential Elections Rules, 1974. This list includes the names and addresses of all eligible members of the Electoral College.

“The Commission has finalised the Electoral College list for the Vice Presidential Election, 2025. These members are listed in a continuous serial order, arranged alphabetically based on the State or Union Territory of their respective Houses,” the statement read.

According to the Commission, the finalised list aims to ensure transparency and accuracy in the conduct of the election to the second-highest constitutional office in the country. With this crucial step now complete, the schedule for the Vice Presidential election is expected to be announced soon.

The Vice President of India also serves as the ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. This latest development officially initiates the election process, just days after the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar from the post, citing health concerns, a move that has stirred considerable political debate.

As the process unfolds, political circles are closely monitoring the situation for announcements regarding candidates and polling dates.
