London: The Lok Sabha election 2024 gives hope of a freer society and a chance to end poverty and inequality, British politician Jeremy Corbyn said on Wednesday. He said that it has given hope to people against repressive legislation, Scroll reported.

The British MP told so after filing his nomination papers as an independent candidate for the July 4 general elections in the United Kingdom. Corbyn was a member of the Opposition Labour Party but got expelled after his role in 'antisemitism'.

"You've given hope to people, hope to people of a freer society, hope to people against repressive legislation," Scroll quoted Corbyn. "But above all, I hope that people will end the greatest levels of poverty and inequality in India."

He said that he was looking forward to visiting India soon.

He then spoke about his work with unions that are focusing on the Global South to bring social justice and change. He recalled one of his visits to India's Mumbai in 2023, where he attended a huge rally of rail workers defending their pension system against the market economy and privatisation.

"Well done, guys, you've got an awful lot to celebrate, and it's a big step forward to social justice," Scroll quoted him.

In the UK, the Labour Party is expected to win in the general elections in July, while Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Conservative Party might have to step down.

After being suspended from the Labour Party, Cobryn became an independent legislator from Islington North, which he has been representing since 1983 under the party.
