Govt school teacher suspended after cheque with spelling errors goes viral

Shimla: A government school teacher in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district has been suspended after a cheque he issued, containing multiple obvious spelling mistakes, went viral on social media, raising concerns about the quality of education in state-run schools.
The Directorate of School Education took action against Atter Singh, a drawing teacher at the Government Senior Secondary School in Rohnat. The Rs 7,616 cheque, issued on September 25, drew public attention for errors such as “Saven Thursday Six Harendra Sixty”, which led to widespread ridicule online.

Following the incident, the Directorate sought detailed explanations from the school principal, the teacher, and other officials responsible. Both the principal and Singh were asked to appear before the Director of School Education Ashish Kohli on Saturday.
During the hearing, Singh acknowledged that the mistakes were made inadvertently due to a lack of carefulness. However, his explanation was not accepted. “Any act of negligence or disregard for official responsibilities that could damage the Department’s image will invite strict disciplinary action,” Kohli warned.
The Directorate has instructed the Deputy Director of School Education (Elementary), Sirmaur, to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Singh under the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1965, and to submit a report on the actions taken as soon as possible.
Officials stressed that accuracy, responsibility, and administrative propriety must be maintained in all official documents, including financial paperwork, to protect the credibility of the education department.
