Heavy showers in Maharashtra; power outage puts 19 villages in dark

Mumbai: In Maharashtra, certain areas have been experiencing heavy rainfall since Friday evening and due to damage from flooding of major power systems, 19 villages are facing power outages. Reports also suggest that the submergence of power systems is hindering maintenance of power supply, and in many areas, electricity has been disabled due to safety reasons.
According to The Free Press Journal, heavy showers impacted the power systems in Nanded, Parbhani and Hingoli.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert', warning of extremely heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts on Sunday, extending the wet patch in the region, PTI reported.
“Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts with very intense spells in some areas. Coastal districts such as Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, along with the ghat regions of Nashik, are also expected to witness heavy showers,” an IMD official said.
The department updated its forecast on Saturday afternoon, stating that compared to the coastal belt and parts of north Konkan, the rest of the state, including north Maharashtra, central Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha, is likely to receive only low-intensity rainfall on Sunday.
On Saturday morning, the weather bureau issued an ‘orange alert', forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai during the day. The city skies remained overcast through the day, with some areas receiving light to moderate showers.
In a related incident, four labourers got stranded on a barrage on Saturday due to a sudden rise in water level following heavy rains in Ahmedpur taluka of Maharashtra's Latur district, and were rescued nearly eight hours later, officials said.
