'Helped criminal escape': Raids in Delhi to arrest AAP's Amanatullah Khan
text_fieldsNew Delhi: AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan finds himself in deepening legal trouble as a joint team of the Delhi Police and Crime Branch conducts raids to arrest him.
According to police sources, Khan is likely to be taken into custody soon over allegations of obstructing a law enforcement operation. The Delhi Police have registered an FIR against the Okhla legislator, citing charges under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 221 (harbouring offenders), Section 132 (obstructing public servants), and Section 121(1) (conspiracy against the state).
The controversy erupted on Monday when the Crime Branch launched a raid in Jamia Nagar to apprehend Shahbaz Khan, a Proclaimed Offender wanted for attempted murder. During the operation, Amanatullah Khan allegedly intervened, facilitating Shahbaz Khan’s escape.
Police officials claim that Khan and his supporters deliberately disrupted the operation, resulting in chaos. When officers attempted to detain the MLA for interference, a heated altercation ensued, during which Shahbaz Khan managed to flee. Authorities also accuse Khan and his supporters of assaulting police personnel during the confrontation.
“Two officers were sent for medical examination following the scuffle, but no serious injuries were reported,” a Crime Branch officer stated.
In response, a case was registered against Amanatullah Khan, and police teams are conducting raids at multiple locations to track him down.
Khan, a senior AAP leader, has represented the Okhla constituency since 2015. In the recent Delhi Assembly elections, he secured his third consecutive victory, defeating BJP candidate Manish Chaudhary by a margin of 23,639 votes. He is also among the Delhi MLAs with the highest number of criminal cases.
