Meerut: The Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha on Thursday marked the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination by honoring Nathuram Godse, the man who shot and killed Gandhi on this day in 1948.

At an event held at the ‘Amar Martyr Nathuram Godse Nana Apte Dham,’ a site associated with the right-wing outfit, members gathered to glorify Godse’s actions. Pandit Ashok Sharma, a senior leader of the Mahasabha and founder of the venue, led the ceremony, which included a 'havan puja' and a recital of the 'Hanuman Chalisa'.

According to Sharma, the event aimed to "remove the soul of Karamchand Gandhi" and eradicate "Gandhism" from India. He also demanded that the Indian government revoke Mahatma Gandhi’s designation as the "Father of the Nation."

The Mahasabha further announced plans to honor the families of Nathuram Godse and Narayan Nana Apte, who was also involved in Gandhi’s assassination. The event concluded with the distribution of sweets among supporters.

Godse, allegedly linked to the Hindu Mahasabha, shot Gandhi at a prayer meeting at Birla House in Delhi and was later executed in Ambala jail in 1949.
