New Delhi: The BRICS bloc of nations in which India is a member have expressed ‘grave concern’ at the military strikes on Iran.

The ten-member bloc of emerging economies termed the recent military offensive against the Gulf country as violations of international law and the UN Charter, The Wire reported.

Brazil’s foreign ministry issued the joint statement on Wednesday urging parties involved in the conflict to turn to diplomatic engagement and de-escalation.

The bloc, currently led by Brazil as it is holding the rotating presidency, will host the annual BRICS summit next week.

India has not reportedly distanced itself from or objected to the bloc’s statement expressing concern at the attack on Iran.

However, India distanced itself from a statement the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation issued earlier this month ‘strongly’ condemning the Israel’s attack on Iran.

‘We express grave concern over the military strikes against the Islamic Republic of Iran since June 13, 2025, which constitute a violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and the subsequent escalation of the security situation in the Middle East,’ the BRICS statement said.

The statement expressed ‘concern’ at any attack on ‘peaceful nuclear installations’ violating ‘international law and relevant resolutions of the International Atomic Energy Agency’.

Alongside India and Brazil, the BRICS bloc has onboard Russia, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.

BRICS bloc also called for upholding the nuclear safeguards, safety and security ‘even in armed conflicts, to protect people and the environment from harm’.

Warning that the rising tension could cause ‘unpredictable consequences for international peace and security,’ it stressed the urgent need for breaking ‘the cycle of violence and restore peace’.
