Bengaluru: A 21-year-old man in Karnataka died after he drank five bottles of liquor to win a bet.

The incident took place at Poojarahalli village in Mulbagal taluk of Kolar district.

Karthik, father of a newborn, boasted to his friends Venkata Reddy, Subramani, and three others that he could gulp five full bottles of neat liquor, according to NDTV.

Neat liquor means spirit being served directly from the bottle into a glass without diluting using ice or water.

One of the friends of Venkata Reddy offered Karthik Rs 10,000 if he could pull off the dangerous stunt.

Accepting the challenge, Karthik began gulping down five bottles of liquor and fell ill.

He was rushed to a hospital at Mulbagal in Kolar district where he died during treatment.

Karthik’s wife gave birth to a child just eight days ago, a year after their marriage.

Nangali police filed a case against six persons including Venkata Reddy and Subramani alongside arresting them.

Binge drinking, consuming excessive amount of alcohol in a short period of time, claims 178,000 deaths each year in the US, according to a study.

Health experts constantly warn youngsters against excessive alcohol consumption.

It is reported citing the World Health Organisation (WHO) that about 2.6 million people die each year of alcohol consumption, making up 4.7 percent of global deaths.

WHO made it clear that there is no ‘safe’ level of alcohol consumption, as there is no scientific data recommending a ‘safe’ level where it would not harm the drinker.
