Kolkata: One more person has been arrested in connection with the vandalism during Lionel Messi’s event at Salt Lake Stadium on December 13, taking the total number of arrests to six, the Bidhannagar police said on Wednesday.

The latest arrest was made late on Tuesday night, with the accused identified as Rupak Mandal. He is expected to be produced before the Bidhannagar Sub-Divisional Court and charged with vandalism, creating disorder, and disrupting law and order at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan.

Police sources said that several other individuals are suspected of involvement in the incident and may be interrogated if necessary. The number of arrests could increase depending on the progress of the investigation, particularly after the examination of CCTV and other video footage.

Authorities are investigating how the situation spiralled out of control on the day of the event, identifying those directly involved in the vandalism and those who may have instigated the violence. Investigators are also analysing the role of each arrested individual separately.

In response to the incident, the West Bengal government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Tuesday to probe the security lapses and how disorder spread at the stadium. The SIT members visited the Yuva Bharati Krirangan on Wednesday, inspecting the site, assessing the extent of damage, and preparing a detailed report on the security arrangements during the event.

The administration is also considering strengthening security measures for future large-scale events at the stadium, including enhanced police surveillance, stricter entry checks, and the use of modern technology to manage crowds.

The chaos erupted on December 13, when the Salt Lake Stadium was already full long before Messi’s arrival. Spectators surrounded the football legend, trying to take photographs, which led to confusion and a chaotic environment. Messi’s security team was present, but the situation remained uncontrollable, forcing Messi to leave the field within just 22 minutes.

Following his exit, vandalism broke out: chairs and bottles were thrown onto the field, gates were broken, and spectators entered the playing area. Vandalism also occurred in the galleries and restrooms of the stadium.

Earlier arrests included event organiser Satadru Dutta, while top officials faced accountability measures. On Tuesday, state Sports Minister Aroop Biswas resigned, and senior IPS officers, including DGP Rajeev Kumar, were issued show-cause notices.

The SIT’s investigation will focus on understanding the causes of the disorder, the role of officials, and ensuring stricter safety protocols for future events.
