Lives in his own world: HC slams Baba Ramdev over 'sharbat jihad' remarks
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday remarked that yoga practitioner Ramdev was "not in control of anyone" and lived in his own world before holding him in prima facie contempt of its order regarding his controversial "sharbat jihad" comments about Hamdard's Rooh Afza.
The court had earlier directed him not to make any statements or share videos concerning Hamdard's products in the future.
"In view of the last order, his affidavit as well as this video are prima facie in contempt. I will issue a contempt notice now. We are just calling him here," Justice Amit Bansal said after being informed on Thursday that despite the court's April 22 directions, Ramdev published a video making objectionable statements.
"He (Ramdev) is not in control of anyone. He lives in his own world," the judge remarked.
Ramdev's counsel requested the court to postpone the proceedings due to the unavailability of the arguing counsel.
Therefore, the court deferred the hearing temporarily.
Hamdard National Foundation India has filed a plea against Ramdev and Patanjali Foods Ltd over his controversial remarks.
In a previous hearing, the court stated that Ramdev's "sharbat jihad" comment about Hamdard's Rooh Afza was indefensible and deeply troubling. Following this, Ramdev assured the court that he would promptly remove the related videos and social media posts.
Hamdard's counsel alleged that while promoting Patanjali's "gulab sharbat," Ramdev claimed that profits from Hamdard's Rooh Afza were being used to fund madrasas and mosques.
