New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clarified on Friday that reports suggesting Indian nurse Nimisha Priya's death sentence in Yemen had been revoked or that a deal had been made for her release were inaccurate.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, addressing the media at the weekly briefing, urged journalists to avoid speculation and highlighted the sensitive nature of the case.

He noted that the Indian government had been extending all necessary support and that, due to its sustained diplomatic efforts, Yemeni authorities had agreed to delay the execution. Nimisha Priya has been on death row since 2020 for her alleged involvement in the murder of a Yemeni citizen.

The case has drawn the attention of human rights groups and the Indian diaspora, who have consistently appealed for leniency. Efforts to secure relief for her are reportedly ongoing through both legal and diplomatic channels.

Jaiswal said the Indian government is continuing its active engagement in Nimisha Priya’s case, stating that officials are monitoring the situation closely and extending all possible support. He also mentioned that India is in communication with certain friendly nations to explore diplomatic avenues, TNIE reported.

In light of recent reports suggesting progress in the case, Jaiswal cautioned against misinformation, pointing out that the matter remains highly sensitive and complicated. He stressed that inaccurate or speculative media coverage could hinder ongoing efforts and urged the press to report responsibly.

Despite India's diplomatic efforts to ensure Priya’s safety, officials clarified that no formal agreement has been reached that would change her current legal status in Yemen. Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala, was sentenced to death for her alleged involvement in the murder of a Yemeni national in July 2017.
