Hyderabad: The chief minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, described Muharram, which is observed by Muslims as a symbol of numerous sacrifices, particularly in remembrance of the sacrifices of Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain.

He claimed that it reflected Telangana's Ganga Jamuni Tehzeeb, which stood for the interfaith harmony and brotherhood of Hindus and Muslims.

KCR said in his statement that for generations Telangana people of both the Hindu and Muslim communities have been marking Muharram to commemorate the sacrifices.

“Muharram is also a symbol of the cultural unity of Hindus and Muslims in Telangana who organise the ‘Peerla Panduga’ together,” said KCR.

KCR recalled that Hindus refer to Hasan and Hussain as Ashanna and Oosanna, respectively and praise their sacrifice and walk on hot coals.
