Nomination process begins for Vice President’s election

The Election Commission on Thursday officially began the process for electing the next Vice President by releasing the election notification. The poll is scheduled for September 9.

According to the schedule, candidates have until August 21 to file their nominations. The nomination papers will be scrutinised on August 22, and the final date to withdraw from the race is August 25.

The election was necessitated after Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down as Vice President on July 21, 2025, citing health concerns. He resigned under Article 67(a) of the Constitution, cutting short a term that was originally meant to run until August 2027, TNIE reported.

As per constitutional rules, a new Vice President must be elected when the post falls vacant mid-term. The elected individual will then serve a full five-year term starting from the day they take office.
