Outrage as cake taken into Pakistan High Commission amid terror grief
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Outrage has erupted across India after a video surfaced showing a man carrying a cake into the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, just two days after a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam claimed the lives of 26 civilians.
The footage, which quickly went viral on social media, depicts a man in a blue Pathani suit walking toward the Pakistan High Commission with a white cake box in hand. The video was reportedly captured on Thursday, a day after India issued a strong diplomatic response to Pakistan over the April 22 massacre carried out by terrorists affiliated with The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
The attack took place in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam, where 25 tourists and one local were gunned down, sparking nationwide mourning and protests. Crowds gathered outside the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi, chanting slogans like "Pakistan Murdabad" amid heightened security.
The cake incident, occurring during peak diplomatic tensions, has been perceived by many as an insensitive and inflammatory gesture. Reporters stationed near the gate questioned the man about the occasion, asking, “Why are you carrying the cake? What is this cake for?” and “Can you please tell us the occasion? It can be a birthday cake. It can be for a function; what is the occasion?” The man, however, remained silent and walked into the premises without offering any explanation.
Social media has since been flooded with angry reactions, with users condemning the act as tone-deaf and provocative. “He is celebrating the death of Hindus in India. Shameful,” one user posted. Another wrote, “India mourns the Pahalgam attack, yet the Pakistan High Commission orders cake—what exactly are they celebrating now?”
“Celebrating bloodshed? This is beyond shame—it’s a chilling taunt. Will the world stay silent?” read another comment, while others labeled Pakistan as a “global terrorist” and described the gesture as “disgusting.”
The video’s emergence comes amid India's escalating retaliatory measures. In the wake of the Pahalgam killings, New Delhi has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, closed the Attari-Wagah border, canceled the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) for Pakistani nationals, and expelled Pakistani military attaches from India. These actions mark one of the sharpest diplomatic escalations between the two countries in recent years.
No official statement has been issued by the Pakistan High Commission regarding the video, but the timing and symbolism of the incident have further intensified public anger and diplomatic friction.
