PIL filed in Calcutta HC for probe into funding of Jagannath Temple in Digha

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was submitted to the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, raising concerns about alleged “irregularities” in the management and operations of the recently opened Jagannath Dham temple in Digha, West Bengal, Indian Express reported.

The issue was brought before the division bench comprising Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Smita Das De, who allowed the petition to be formally filed.

The petitioner challenged the legitimacy of offering tax exemptions on donations, arguing that such benefits are questionable if the temple functions as part of a “West Bengal government-funded cultural centre.”

The petition alleges that the temple is being run under the pretence of a private trust, while the donation address provided is reportedly that of HIDCO (Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation), a government entity. The petitioner has requested an investigation into how a private trust is permitted to utilize the facilities and resources of a state-run body.

Another concern highlighted in the PIL is the deployment of civic volunteers for temple-related tasks. According to the petitioner, the state cabinet sanctioned the recruitment of around 100 civic volunteers for the temple, with an official notification already issued. The petition seeks a court directive requiring the temple authorities to explain the legal and administrative grounds for this recruitment.

Inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on April 30, the Jagannath Dham temple is inspired by the famous Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, and constructed in the traditional Kalinga architectural style. Developed by the state government at a cost of Rs 250 crore, the temple involved the work of over 800 artisans.

The project is part of a broader effort to establish Digha as a prominent religious and tourist hub. Sources indicate that the state government also intends to host an annual Ratha Yatra at the temple premises.
