Raja urges DMK cadre to refrain from wearing attire resembling Sanghis

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) general secretary and Lok Sabha MP from Nilgiris, A Raja, has advised party members to refrain from wearing religious symbols while donning the party’s traditional attire, arguing that such a distinction is necessary to differentiate them from members of Sangh organisations.
Addressing party cadre at an event, he maintained that while personal religious beliefs were not being questioned, external religious markers should be removed when representing the party, India Today reported.
His remarks, which were captured in a widely circulated video, suggested that party members could continue their religious practices privately but should avoid publicly displaying religious symbols while wearing DMK’s signature dhoti.
He emphasised that the party was not opposed to faith but believed in a broader interpretation of divinity rooted in compassion and social justice rather than religious rituals.
The statement has drawn attention, particularly in the context of Raja’s past remarks on religion, which have previously sparked controversy. He had earlier described Hinduism in negative terms, asserting that it posed a broader challenge beyond India.
