New Delhi: The schedule for the election to the office of the President of Indian will be announced by the Election Commission on Thursday.

The Election Commission called for a press conference at 3 pm to announce the election schedule. President Ramnath Kovind's term ends on July 24, before which an election must be held to elect the next president.

The president is elected by members of the Electoral College, which includes elected members from both houses of parliament, as well as elected members from all states, including the national capital, Delhi, and the Union Territory of Puducherry, the New Indian Express reported.

Nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, Lok Sabha or State Legislative Assemblies are not eligible for admission to the Electoral College and are therefore not eligible participate in the election.

Similarly, members of the legislative councils are also not electors for the presidential election. In 2017, the presidential polls were held on July 17 and the counting took place on July 20.
