The Himachal Pradesh Cabinet on Friday approved a cannabis production pilot study to analyse and establish a future roadmap for the product's industrial and medicinal purposes.

The pilot study The universities would be responsible for growing cannabis as part of a study and providing a report within six months. This is expected to be followed by the legalisation of cannabis cultivation in Himachal Pradesh. Universities are also entrusted with developing appropriate cannabis strains for growing as well as ideal cultivation procedures.

The Himachal Pradesh government's move is expected to outline its plans for legalising cannabis for non-intoxicating reasons, Siasat Daily reported.

It is to be carried out in collaboration with Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Krishi Vishvavidyalaya in Palampur, Kangra, and Drb YS Parmar University of Horticulture in Nauni, Solan. The Agriculture Department has been appointed as the nodal department for this program, according to a statement issued here.

The universities would be responsible for growing cannabis as part of a study and providing a report within six months. This is expected to be followed by the legalisation of cannabis cultivation in Himachal Pradesh.
