All India Trinamool Congress on Saturday appointed Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly following the party’s defeat in the recent state elections.

In a statement released on Saturday evening, the party announced that Asima Patra and Nayna Bandyopadhyay had been appointed as deputy leaders of the opposition.

Firhad Hakim, who also serves as the mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, was named the chief whip in the Assembly, The New Indian Express reported.

The TMC said the newly appointed leadership team would work with dedication for the welfare and interests of the people of West Bengal.

The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a decisive victory in the Assembly elections, winning 207 seats in the 294-member House and forming the government in the state for the first time, while the TMC won 80 seats.
