UP govt mandates CCTV cams inside school vehicles

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government issued a circular mandating all school vehicles to install CCTV cameras, a measure to ensure the safety of children. The circular, dated December 29 and issued by transport principal secretary L Venkateshwarlu, stated that the provision would be effective in three months from December 29, India Today reported.
As per the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicle Rules, some school vans have already installed CCTV cameras, but the new circular mandates a deadline for all vans to do the same.
Further, similar cameras will be installed in all public transport after the tabled centralised vehicle location tracking centre starts functioning. The state’s transport department has already appointed a private firm to implement a Vehicle Location Tracking System (VLTS) there.
The government has allowed private agencies to deploy, integrate, test, and operationalise the vehicle tracking platform. It will track and monitor vehicles under the VLTS.
The project intends to connect all public transport vehicles except two-wheelers, three-wheelers and e-rickshaws. These vehicles would be installed with tracking devices, and an integrated control system would monitor the real-time location of the vehicles.
