Uttar Pradesh Police will initiate legal proceedings in the death of 30-year-old cleric Maulana Tousif Raza Mazhari, a Bihar madrasa teacher, after receiving a family complaint alleging assault.

The body was found Sunday near railway tracks in Bareilly’s Palpur Gate area. Initially ruled a fatal fall from a moving train by railway authorities, Bareilly City SP Manush Parik said police responded to a keyman’s alert, identified Raza via his phone, conducted a post-mortem and handed the body to family from Kishanganj.

Raza had travelled to Bareilly for an Urs event. While the family considers it accidental, his wife Tabassum Khatoon claimed she witnessed the assault live on video call Thursday—only then reported to police. In a recording, Raza pleaded for help, saying drunk men accused him of theft, verbally abused and beat him.

SP Parik confirmed legal action will follow the complaint.
