US ties with Pakistan show Modi-Trump bond is hollow: Congress

New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that his widely publicised friendship with United States President Donald Trump is now proving to be "hollow," citing a series of recent diplomatic developments involving Pakistan and the United States.

Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, made the remarks in a post on X, claiming that India’s diplomatic standing has significantly weakened, particularly in the past two months, despite the prime minister’s repeated assertions of strong global relationships.

"The abject failure of Indian diplomacy, especially in the past two months, is revealed most tellingly by four facts. These expose the tall claims made by the Prime Minister and his drum-beaters and cheerleaders," Ramesh wrote.

According to him, since May 10, 2025, President Trump has publicly claimed on 25 occasions that he personally intervened to halt "Operation Sindoor," allegedly warning both India and Pakistan that failure to cease hostilities would jeopardise trade agreements with the United States.

Ramesh further said that on June 10, 2025, General Michael Kurilla, Commander of the US Central Command, described Pakistan as a "phenomenal partner" in the fight against terrorism, raising questions about the depth of India’s strategic relationship with Washington.

On June 18, 2025, Trump hosted a high-profile luncheon at the White House with Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir—an event Ramesh described as "unprecedented." He added that just two months prior, Munir had made "inflammatory, incendiary, and communally provocative" statements, which allegedly served as a backdrop to the brutal Pahalgam terror attacks on April 22, 2025.

Ramesh also pointed to another diplomatic gesture, claiming that on the previous day, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s cooperation in combating terrorism and maintaining regional stability.

Concluding his remarks, the Congress leader referred to Prime Minister Modi’s controversial statement from June 19, 2020, in which he appeared to give a "clean chit" to China despite border tensions, saying that move had already cost India heavily. He asserted that the prime minister’s much-touted personal rapport with President Trump is similarly collapsing under scrutiny.
