Kochi: A leading Catholic organisation in Kerala has called upon Christian youth to actively participate in mainstream politics, stating that remaining aloof from the political sphere is not a morally right position.

In a circular issued on the occasion of Youth Day, observed on July 6, the Youth Commission under the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC) – the apex body of Catholic bishops in the state – made a strong appeal for political engagement among young members of the community.

"Today's political scenario is utmost chaotic and confusing, and so it is not appropriate for the community youths, having leadership skills and critical thinking abilities, to keep themselves away from politics," the circular said.

The document highlighted that the involvement of a new generation equipped with knowledge, talent, and leadership skills is essential for resolving various social challenges. It stressed that political participation is necessary for shaping a just society and ensuring representation of community interests.

The circular, issued by Christudas R, Chairperson of the KCBC Youth Commission, was read out during Sunday Mass in Catholic churches across Kerala, transcending denominational boundaries.

It also urged Catholic youth organisations to focus on training and equipping potential leaders within the community for active political roles. The Commission called on capable and qualified youth to embrace this mission with a commitment to the broader welfare of society and the Catholic community.

The circular further pointed to the growing trend of young members of the Christian community migrating abroad in search of employment, and expressed concern over the declining representation of Christian youth in mainstream political parties. Church sources said this declining political presence was a key factor behind the Commission’s decision to issue the call to action.
