New Delhi: Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar has issued a controversial circular to observe the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. The governor has instructed the vice chancellors to organise various programs on August 14 in connection with the day.

In 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called for the celebration of the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. Last year, the UGC also gave similar instructions on how to observe the day in universities. As per the current instructions given by the governor, vice chancellors, students, and teachers have been asked to participate in observing the day.

According to his circular, universities can organise seminars on the subject. Organise plays that expose the horrors of Partition. Also, the Chancellor, the governor, has directed the universities to provide an action plan in the circular.

The pain of Partition can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced due to hatred and violence, and many lost their lives. In memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had written on X in 2021 that August 14 should be observed as the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

A week ago, the tussle between the Kerala government and the Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar over the appointment of university vice chancellors reached new levels with the latter ‘unilaterally' posting temporary VCs at two universities without any discussion with the government, PTI reported.

Kerala government, as well as the opposition Congress, alleged that the governor appointed two VCs who are inclined towards the Sangh Parivar. One of the VCs, K Shivaprasad, had attended an event organised by RSS in Kochi.
