New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Kerala government and the state's police chief over the tragic death of a nursing student, who passed away after being in a coma for three months following an alleged suicide attempt. The incident, which occurred in Kasaragod district, has raised serious concerns about the violation of the victim's human rights. According to media reports, the third-year nursing student attempted suicide in her hostel room amid allegations of harassment by the hostel warden.

The NHRC, taking suo motu cognizance of the matter, highlighted the gravity of the situation and the potential violation of human rights, as reported on March 22. Initially admitted to a private hospital in Mangaluru, the student was later transferred to Kozhikode Medical College, where she remained in critical condition until her death. In response, the NHRC has directed Kerala's Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police to submit a detailed report within four weeks.

Reports from fellow students have accused the hostel management of subjecting the deceased to mental harassment, particularly when she was unwell. The allegations point to the warden's actions contributing to the distress faced by the student at her workplace.
