Nipah! Kerala reports another death!
text_fieldsKozhikode: Kerala reported another death due to the Nipah virus on Saturday. The victim is a native of Mannarkkad in Palakkad.
The victim died on Saturday evening while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna in Malappuram district, and Nipah was confirmed in a swab test at Manjeri Medical College. Health Minister Veena George announced that the body will be cremated following the protocol, while there are currently 497 people on the Nipah contact list in the state.
The figures are 114 in Kozhikode, 203 in Malappuram, 178 in Palakkad, and two in Ernakulam. When 10 people are under treatment in Malappuram, one is placed in the ICU. So far, 62 samples have tested negative.
Five people are under treatment in isolation in Palakkad and have been discharged. A total of 14 people in the highest-risk category and 82 people in the high-risk category are under observation in the state.
The central team has visited Malappuram and Palakkad districts. It arrived in Kerala on Wednesday to inspect Nipah-affected regions and coordinate preventive measures.
The National Joint Outbreak Response Team, established by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, visited Malappuram district to study the Nipah situation, report it to the Centre, and assist the state with preventive measures, according to official sources.
Dr Pranay Verma, the Joint Director and Public Health Specialist at the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), is leading the 10-member expert team, according to an official statement.
The team also includes scientists from the ICMR-National Institute of Virology, Pune, wildlife specialists, veterinary consultants, and experts from the animal welfare department.
