Red alert in Kerala's 4 districts as heavy rains cause mudslides, waterlogging
text_fieldsThiruvananthapuram: Incessant rains in Kerala caused small mudslides and flooding of homes in Kozhikode district, as well as waterlogging of low-lying areas and an increase in water levels in several rivers around the state.
The water level of many rivers in Kasaragod district, including Uppala, Manjeswaram, Madhur, and Puthige, surged as a result of the recent rains, prompting authorities to issue a warning to those living along their banks to be cautious.
Similar warnings were issued by authorities with regard to the Korapuzha and Kuttiady rivers in Kozhikode, Perumba in Kannur and Kabani in Wayanad districts of the state.
As the rains continued, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday upgraded the orange alert in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts to red.
It also upgraded the yellow alert in Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts to orange.
A red alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rain of over 20 cm in 24 hours, while an orange alert means very heavy rain of 11 cm to 20 cm, and a yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.
The IMD also issued a red alert for the northern districts of Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod for the next three days, for Kozhikode district on July 19 and 20 and for Malappuram district on July 20.
