Kochi: In a setback to St. Rita’s School management over its stance on banning headscarves, the Kerala High Court has rejected the school’s plea to stay the DDE notice directing that a student wearing a headscarf be allowed to attend classes.

The controversy began when the management of St. Rita’s School expelled an eighth-grade student for wearing a headscarf. Following the public outcry, Deputy Director of Education (DDE) Subin Paul conducted an inquiry into the incident.

In his report, the DDE stated that the school had erred in its handling of the situation and clarified that the student could attend school wearing the headscarf prescribed in accordance with the uniform.

Challenging this report, the school management approached the High Court seeking a stay. However, the court observed that the DDE’s findings would remain valid and refused to stay the report.
