Adelaide: A study by the University of South Australia confirmed that eggs in meals do not increase low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol or bad cholesterol, but asserted that eggs help to reduce the blood stream. The study warned that saturated fats are the real threat to humans, The Indian Express reported.

Last year, a report by IANS, citing experts such as Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, Kerala State IMA Research Cell Chairman, stated that consuming an egg every day is safe and good for your heart, and it will not increase your blood cholesterol levels. Jayadevan suggested then that eggs are an important source of all-around nutrition.

“Eggs are perhaps the best source of protein in the world, it also contains other nutrients, including vitamins and minerals. Importantly, they are easily available and relatively economical,” he had told IANS.

“There is a lot of unnecessary anxiety about the consumption of eggs, to the extent that people are fearful of consuming them. This is unwarranted because various studies have shown that increasing the number of eggs taken daily does not necessarily lead to a rise in blood cholesterol,” said Jayadevan, also a gastroenterologist.

In the case of the new research by the University of South Australia, lead researcher Prof Jon Buckley said that eggs have been unfairly cracked by outdated dietary advice. They are unique, despite being high in cholesterol, since they are low in saturated fats, he said.

He explained that through his team’s study, they separated the effects of cholesterol and saturated fat, finding that high dietary cholesterol from eggs, when eaten as part of a low saturated fat diet, does not raise bad cholesterol levels. The team found that saturated fat drives bad cholesterol levels, he said.

Balbir Singh, group chairman, cardiac sciences, Pan Max, said that he always prescribes his patients one whole egg daily because many studies showed that dietary cholesterol does not impact existing cholesterol levels.
