Riyadh introduces first phase of residential parking permits
text_fieldsThe Riyadh Parking Project has launched the first phase of its non-paid managed parking system in residential neighbourhoods, aiming to regulate public vehicle parking and prevent spillover from nearby commercial areas.
The initiative follows the earlier introduction of paid parking on key commercial streets. It seeks to improve parking efficiency, reduce random and unauthorized vehicle use and enhance the overall urban environment.
Under the new system, vehicles not belonging to residents will be monitored, with digital residential parking permits introduced for residents and their guests. These permits can be obtained via the Riyadh Parking mobile app, which is linked to the national “Nafath” platform for secure registration and access.
The initial phase covers the Al-Wurud neighbourhood, with expansion planned for other districts near commercial zones. Phase one includes 12 areas, such as Al-Rahmaniyah, West Olaya, Al-Muruj, King Fahd and Al-Sulaimaniah.
Advanced technology, including smart patrol vehicles equipped with automated license plate recognition (ALPR) cameras, will be used to detect parking violations in both commercial and residential areas.
Launched in August 2024, the Riyadh Parking Project is among the world’s largest smart parking initiatives, aiming to regulate over 140,000 non-paid residential spaces and manage 24,000 paid spots in commercial districts.
