The world-renowned Chinese production of Opera Carmen will be staged in Saudi Arabia for the first time, with performances scheduled at the King Fahd Cultural Center in Riyadh from September 4 to 6.

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) is bringing the French composer Georges Bizet’s masterpiece to the Kingdom as part of the 2025 cultural calendar. The China National Opera House (CNOH) will present the show, marking a milestone event in the country’s performing arts scene.

The staging of Carmen coincides with the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Saudi Arabia, which both countries are celebrating as the “China-Saudi Arabia Year of Culture".

The opera, first performed in Paris on March 3, 1875, has captivated audiences worldwide for nearly 150 years. Known for its mix of dialogue and song, Carmen tells the dramatic story of soldier Don José, whose life unravels after he is seduced by the free-spirited gypsy Carmen.

RCRC said hosting the opera reflects its ongoing commitment to enriching Riyadh’s cultural landscape with world-class programs that embrace both classical and contemporary art, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030.

Tickets for the three consecutive evening performances, which start at 8 p.m., are available at www.carmen.platinumlist.net
