Prince Fahd bin Sultan, Emir of the Tabuk Region, on Tuesday launched the operational phase of Tabuk’s new public bus transit system — the first in Saudi Arabia to incorporate electric buses into its public transport network.

Electric vehicles now make up 25% of the fleet, marking a major milestone in the Kingdom’s shift toward environmentally sustainable mobility. Tabuk becomes the first city in Saudi Arabia to integrate electric buses in a full-scale transit infrastructure.

The modern transport network spans five key routes covering a total of 136 kilometers. Operated by 30 advanced buses and staffed by 90 trained Saudi drivers, the system links 106 stations across major residential, commercial and government districts. The initiative aims to streamline daily commuting for residents, professionals and tourists alike.

Prince Fahd credited national leadership for enabling the project, saying it reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader transformation goals. “This project will significantly ease congestion and improve mobility across Tabuk, while also enhancing the sustainability and efficiency of city transport,” he said.

“Saudi citizens always support successful projects — and this will be no exception”.

Following the inauguration, Prince Fahd toured the system aboard one of the electric buses and received a comprehensive overview of service operations. The briefing included details on route optimization, real-time tracking capabilities and passenger experience enhancements delivered through integrated digital applications.

Dr. Rumaih Al-Rumaih, Acting President of the Transport General Authority, described the launch as a “qualitative leap” in urban transit. He reaffirmed the authority’s focus on promoting “sustainable, safe and efficient urban mobility across Saudi cities”.

He also highlighted the growing public reliance on mass transit, stating that “over 104 million passengers used similar bus networks across 15 cities in 2024”.

The Tabuk project is being operated by the Saudi Public Transport Company (SAPTCO), which is responsible for ensuring service quality and operational excellence in the region.
