Abu Dhabi to introduce driverless pods by year-end
text_fieldsAbu Dhabi is preparing to launch a new era of smart mobility with the planned introduction of driverless pods before the end of this year.
Sebastian Mangeant, chief executive of Abu Dhabi Transport Company (ADT), confirmed that the French-developed Urbanloop system is on track to begin operations. Speaking at the Global Rail conference in Abu Dhabi, he noted that a working prototype has already been unveiled.
“One year after signing our partnership, we have the module on display. By the end of this year and moving into next, the system will be in motion and ready to serve the public”, Mangeant said.
The compact pod units, presented at the ADT exhibition stand, are built to carry passengers across short urban routes, offering a cleaner and more efficient alternative to conventional transport.
Industry experts also emphasized the wider benefits of the technology. Hasan Al Hosani, CEO of Smart Solutions at Space 42, explained that integrating the pods with Etihad Rail could reshape daily commutes.
“Linking the national rail network to autonomous vehicles can encourage people to switch from private cars to shared mobility models”, he said.
The initiative reflects Abu Dhabi’s push to expand sustainable and technology-driven transport solutions, aligning with its vision for smarter, greener urban infrastructure.
