The Executive Council of Dubai has approved a comprehensive development plan for the Dubai Metro and surrounding areas, aiming to expand the network to 140 stations by 2040.

The plan was announced on Sunday, focusing on enhancing economic opportunities around metro stations and increasing the share of public transport usage to 45%. Additionally, it aims to reduce carbon emissions significantly to 16 tonnes per capita.

The current network, which has 64 stations operating over 84 square kilometres, will be expanded to 96 stations covering 140 square kilometres by 2030. The ultimate goal is to achieve over 228 square kilometres of development by 2040.

The plan also aims to boost station populations and add more residential, commercial, office and service spaces around Dubai Metro stations.
