Perhaps the organisers didn't expect such a large gathering. India's open nets session in Adelaide prior to the second day and night test against Australia turned carnivalesque. Almost. It descended into chaos.
Approximately 3,000 (some estimate 5,000) spectators gathered at Adelaide's practice wickets to see their beloved stars go through their practice routines. According to reports, the crowd began laughing and teasing the athletes whenever they got out or missed the ball. In contrast, the Australian team practice drew fewer than 100 people.
The audience even appeared to become personal, insulting a specific player for his fitness. The team was particularly irritated by the raucous audience, which distracted them and made concentration while batting difficult.
“It was complete chaos. During the Australian training session, not more than 70-odd people turned up but during India’s session, 3,000 came. No one expected so many fans to turn up,” a senior Indian cricket board official told a news agency, TNIE reported .
Cricketers' anonymity in the last century is gradually fading as South Asian groups in Australia become more engaged. The BCCI has prohibited any subsequent net sessions.
