London: Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has retired from professional football. The 37-year-old, who is part of the United squad on a pre-season tour of Asia, announced his retirement after Friday's match against Hong Kong, where United came from a goal down to win three times in the second half.

The player decided to stop playing when his contract with United was due to expire at the end of June. He has played 240 games for United in different championships over two seasons. He has won three Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League title and one FA Cup title with the club. He has played 107 games for the Northern Ireland national team. Evans is one of the greatest players in the history of Irish football.

Evans, who came through United's academy, made his debut for the club in 2006. He was a key player for United from 2006 to 2015. During this time, he also played on loan for Royal Antwerp and Sunderland. He played for West Bromwich Albion from 2015 to 2018 and for Leicester City from 2018 to 2023. He won the FA Cup with Leicester.

It was in 2023 he went to the United. He played in last year's FA Cup final against Manchester City. Ivan is the third player to leave United at the end of the season, following Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelöf.

Evans was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2023 for his services to football. He has made 13 substitute appearances for United this season, including a last-minute substitute appearance in the final Premier League game of the season against Aston Villa.
