India wins freestyle team title at U23 Asian Wrestling Championships with 27 medals
text_fieldsIndia’s men’s freestyle wrestling team won the Team Championship Trophy at the U23 Asian Wrestling Championships in Da Nang, Vietnam, finishing ahead of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
India topped the freestyle standings with a haul of nine medals, including four gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.
Akshay T Dhere in the 57kg category, Vicky in 97kg, Kumar Mohit in 65kg, and Chandermohan in 79kg won gold medals for India.
Deepak Rathi in 61kg, Punit Kumar in 92kg, and Lacky in 125kg secured silver medals, while Deepak Berwal in 74kg and Mor Sachin in 82kg claimed bronze medals.
India finished the overall tournament with 27 medals across freestyle, women’s wrestling, and Greco-Roman categories, including 11 gold, seven silver, and nine bronze medals.
The women’s wrestling team contributed 10 medals, including six golds. Muskan in 53kg, Tapasya in 57kg, Bhagyashree in 62kg, Pulkit in 67kg, Mansi in 68kg, and Kajal in 76kg won gold medals.
Neha in 59kg and Sweety in 50kg took silver medals, while Amruta in 72kg and Ahilya in 55kg secured bronze medals.
In Greco-Roman wrestling, Sumit won gold in the 63kg division. Suraj in 60kg and Sagar Singh in 67kg earned silver medals.
Bronze medals in Greco-Roman were won by Neeraj Patel in 55kg, Sachin in 77kg, Rohit Bura in 87kg, Rohit in 97kg, and Hardeep in 130kg.
Wrestling Federation of India president Sanjay Singh said the title win was a major achievement for Indian wrestling and praised the athletes, coaches, and support staff for the performance.
The U17 Asian Wrestling Championships are scheduled to begin in Da Nang on Sunday.
