Olivos, Argentina: Football legend Diego Maradona on Tuesday night had successful brain surgery on a blood clot, reports say.

It came less than a week after his 60 th birthday.

Maradona had a subdural hematoma, meaning an accumulation of blood between a membrane and his brain, according to his personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque.

"We managed to successfully remove the clot. Diego coped well with the surgery," Leopoldo Luque was quoted as saying.

Although bleeding is under control, the footballer will remain under observation, sources say.

Maradona, who had led Argentina to World Cup title in 1986, has undiminished fan base all over the world.
