US Open: Indian player Yuki Bhambri reaches first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal in doubles
text_fieldsYuki Bhambri has entered the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
The 33-year-old Indian, partnering with New Zealand’s Michael Venus, advanced to the last eight of the US Open men’s doubles.
The 14th-seeded pair defeated Germany’s Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz, seeded fourth, with a 6-4, 6-4 win. The match lasted one hour and 23 minutes. Bhambri and Venus will next face Croatia’s Nikola Mektic and American veteran Rajeev Ram, the 11th seeds.
Bhambri has struggled with injuries throughout his singles career and never progressed beyond the first round at a Grand Slam. In doubles, however, he has enjoyed stronger results. Earlier this year, he reached the third round at both the French Open and Wimbledon.
India’s Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi pushed second seed Hannah Klugman of Britain before bowing out in the girls’ singles second round. Klugman won 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-3 after two hours and two minutes of play.
Maaya came close to breaking Klugman when the Briton served for the match but was unable to convert. Klugman held firm, repeatedly targeting the Indian’s backhand.
Later, Maaya also exited the doubles competition. She and partner Laima Cinalli lost 2-6, 2-6 to fourth seeds Luna Vladson and Jeline Vandromme.
In boys’ doubles, Hitesh Chauhan and Krish Tyagi also fell in their second-round matches, ending India’s run in the junior event.
