OpenAI has publicly shared usage figures for ChatGPT for the first time, revealing the staggering scale at which its AI chatbot is being used across the globe.

According to a report by Axios, ChatGPT processes more than 2.5 billion prompts every day, highlighting the growing integration of AI tools in daily life.

Of these, over 330 million prompts are sent from the United States alone, underscoring the country’s significant contribution to global usage. The remaining messages originate from users around the world, reflecting ChatGPT's broad international reach.

The company also disclosed that ChatGPT now has over 500 million weekly active users. Most of these users rely on the platform’s free tier, further pointing to the tool’s widespread accessibility. ChatGPT’s popularity is also reflected in app store rankings, with the Android app topping the “Top Free” chart on Google Play and the iOS version sitting at second place on Apple’s App Store under “Top Free Apps.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is expected to travel to Washington this week to speak on the importance of democratising AI.

According to sources cited by the report, “Altman's vision is to get the technology into the hands of as many people as possible, and not limiting it to the hands of the few.”

The rapid adoption of ChatGPT and other AI platforms appears to be reshaping internet behavior.

A related report suggests global search traffic dropped 15 percent year-on-year in June 2025. Meanwhile, the percentage of users not clicking through to news websites after searching grew from 56 percent in May 2024 to nearly 69 percent in May 2025.

These trends signal a shift in how people access information, with AI tools like ChatGPT becoming a primary source of answers, bypassing traditional search engines and news portals.
