Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok banned in Turkey over offensive content
text_fieldsThe controversial responses were generated on X, the social media platform owned by Musk, where Grok is integrated. Pro-government broadcaster A Haber reported the offensive content, prompting public outrage and a legal response from the Ankara public prosecutor. Officials cited violations under Turkey’s internet law, claiming the chatbot's content posed a threat to public order.
Following the complaint, a criminal court in Ankara approved the request and directed the country’s telecommunications authority to implement the access ban.
The controversy comes amid criticism of a recent Grok update, which has led to more unfiltered and politically sensitive responses from the chatbot. This has fuelled concerns over AI-generated hate speech and misinformation on digital platforms.
In a statement, X acknowledged the issue, confirming that inappropriate posts had been removed. The platform also said that xAI, the company developing Grok, had implemented stricter safeguards to prevent hate speech from being published in future interactions.
“Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X,” the company said. “xAI is training only truth-seeking, and thanks to the millions of users on X, we are able to quickly identify and update the model where training could be improved.”
The ban underscores growing global tensions around generative AI and the need for stronger regulations as nations confront the challenges of unmoderated, automated content online.
