YouTube introduces labelling of AI-generated content

YouTube, a Google-owned social media and video-sharing platform, has issued new guidelines for identifying synthetic, artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content.

YouTube has requested that its creators label content that is synthetic or artificial intelligence (AI) generated to encourage responsible AI innovation.

According to a blog post by YouTube, viewers are demanding greater transparency regarding whether the content they are seeing is synthetic or altered.

"We're introducing a new tool in Creator Studio requiring creators to disclose to viewers when realistic content - content a viewer could easily mistake for a real person, place, scene, or event - is made with altered or synthetic media, including generative AI. We're not requiring creators to disclose content that is clearly unrealistic, animated, includes special effects, or has used generative AI for production assistance," the blog post said.

The announcement also made clear that content creators and artists will also be able to ask for music and other media that resemble theirs without permission to be taken down.
