YouTube Music to become audio-only service for free users

Videos on YouTube Music will soon become exclusive to paying users. Free listeners will only have access to audio until they upgrade to the premium plan.

YouTube posted the details of the new development on its Community forum. The changes will become effective in Canada on November 3. People who have not subscribed to YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium will not get features like on-demand music selection and unlimited skips.

On the upside, YouTube Music will continue to allow users to access mood mixes for activities like workouts. They can also explore playlists along with ads.

YouTube hasn't revealed its "global expansion plans" yet.
