7.4 magnitude earthquake hits southern coast of Chile, Argentina
text_fieldsSantiago: The United States Geological Survey reported a 7.4 magnitude earthquake off the southern shores of Chile and Argentina on Friday. No damage or casualties were initially reported. Chilean authorities issued a tsunami warning for the country's southernmost region following the earthquake.
Evacuation to a safe zone has been ordered for the coastal sectors of the Magallanes region Because of a tsunami alert, Chile's National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response announced in a public message.
It also requested that all beach areas in the Chilean Antarctic territory be abandoned, AFP reported.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric indicated on social media that the government is fully mobilized to handle any emergencies. He also announced that evacuations were being ordered along the coast of the Magallanes region.
Meanwhile, in Ushuaia, Argentina—the world’s southernmost city—local officials noted that the earthquake was primarily felt within the city and, to a lesser extent, in other parts of the province. Authorities urged residents to stay calm during such incidents.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake's epicentre was located beneath the ocean, approximately 219 kilometres (about 173 miles) south of Ushuaia.
