New York: Harvard University on Thursday made a notable difference to its history by naming Claudine Gay the 30 th president of the university.

The 52-year-old, who is a dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science, is also the second woman to head the school in Cambridge, Massachusetts, news agency AFP reported.

The daughter of Haitian immigrants, according to Harvard, will take over the post on July 1, 2023.

Penny Pritzker, chair of Harvard's presidential search committee reportedly called Claudine a remarkable leader "who is profoundly devoted to sustaining and enhancing Harvard's academic excellence"

Taking over Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 2018, Gay steered it through the difficult time of Covid pandemic.

Reacting to her appointment as president, Gay called it a "moment of remarkable and accelerating change", adding that fundamental assumptions about how the world works are being tested.

Gay will face a test of leadership next July when the Supreme Court might a force the university to revise its admission processes, The New York Times reported.
