Ever Given yet to leave Suez for short of Rs 8,856cr as damages

Cairo: The 'Ever Given,' which had blocked all traffic along the Suez for a week, is yet to leave the canal. Even though the ship was rescued and the trade route restored, Egypt's courts ruled that the company must pay for both the six days of damages and the rescue charges amounting to $120 crores.

Ever Given is now anchored in a lake to the centre of the canal. The massive cargo ship, capable of transporting 200,000 tonnes of cargo, had 18,300 containers when it had gotten stuck in the canal. The court rejected the company's appeals to free the ship. The committee looking into why the incident happened has submitted a report, but it has not been released officially.

On March 23rd, the ship grounded itself on the Suez Canal and blocked traffic across for six days.
