Mexico City: Authorities stated Wednesday that gunmen opened fire on a celebration in the city of Irapuato overnight in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, killing twelve people.

When the shooting started, people were celebrating St. John the Baptist in the street by dancing and drinking. Videos that have gone viral online show revellers screaming and running to avoid the gunfire, AP reported .

In a press conference on Wednesday, Rodolfo Gómez Cervantes, an official from Irapuato, stated that there were now twelve victims. Around Twenty others were injured.

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed regret for the attack and stated that an investigation was underway.

A shooting at a Catholic Church-sponsored celebration in San Bartolo de Berrios, Guanajuato, last month claimed seven lives.

As different organised crime organisations fight for power, Guanajuato, which is northwest of Mexico City, has become one of the most violent states in the nation.

Through the first five months of the year, the state has more than doubled the number of homicides compared to other states with 1,435 homicides.
