Taiwan model dies after a ‘milk injection’ from 'Godfather of Liposuction'
text_fieldsTaipei City: Authorities in Taiwan’s capital city are probing a well-known model’s death after she received a ‘milk injection’ by a doctor known as the ‘Godfather of Liposuction’ a few days ago.
Cai Yuxin, a car show model in her 30s having tens of thousands of followers online, was seeking treatment to cure her chronic insomnia, NDTV reported.
She opted for the procedure known as the ‘milk injection’ at Fairy Clinic in the city after a friend recommended it.
Wu Shaohu, the clinic director and a prominent cosmetic doctor, administered a short-acting intravenous anaesthetic called propofol, commonly used for sedation and anaesthesia.
Shortly after the doctor left the room leaving his male assistant in charge, Cai suffered a cardiac and respiratory arrest.
The panicked assistant alerted the 'Liposuction Godfather' about the emergency situation who on a video call guided the assistant to give the model CPR.
He rushed back to the clinic only to find Cai stopped breathing and her heart was not pumping blood.
The South China Morning Post reported that a possible error caused increased dose of anaesthetic being administered within a short period.
Cai was transported to the hospital for emergency treatment, where she remained in a coma for 18 days.
Cai's family decided to withdraw her life support on June 12 after she showed no signs of survival.
Authorities are probing potential charges of causing serious injuries from negligence and violating the Medical Care Act.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare has classified propofol as a Schedule IV controlled substance thus allowing its administration only by those qualified under appropriate monitoring.
Lai Xianyong, a Taiwanese anaesthesiologist, said that similar incidents occur every year as medical professional give these services ‘without proper airway management training are placing patients' lives in serious jeopardy’.
Cai’s death triggered an outpouring of grief online where she was compared to a famous Taiwanese actress Lin Chi-ling.
