Washington: United States President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India, citing New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil as the reason for the punitive measure.

The White House stated that the decision reinforces previous sanctions against Russia, introduced in response to its actions in Ukraine. The executive order builds upon an earlier announcement made last week, where the President revealed his intention to apply tariffs on Indian goods.

According to the order, India is directly or indirectly involved in importing oil from Russia, which the US deems a threat to its national security and foreign policy. “Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 per cent,” the directive reads.

The new tariff will apply to all qualifying Indian goods entering the United States 21 days after the signing of the order, with certain exceptions. Goods already in transit before the deadline and cleared before September 17 will not be subject to the additional duty.

“Subject to section 3 of this order, this rate of duty shall be effective with respect to goods entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time 21 days after the date of this order, except for goods that (1) were loaded onto a vessel at the port of loading and in transit on the final mode of transit prior to entry into the United States before 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time 21 days after the date of this order; and (2) are entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, before 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on September 17,” the document further states.

These new duties will be in addition to existing tariffs unless the goods fall under specified exemptions previously outlined in earlier executive orders. Goods affected by the order must also comply with strict customs regulations, including classification under “privileged foreign status” when admitted into US foreign trade zones.

President Trump has reserved the authority to revise or amend the order in response to future developments, including retaliatory actions from other nations or any significant change in Russia’s or India’s policy positions.

The order further instructs US agencies such as the Commerce Department, State Department, and the Treasury to monitor oil trade activities of other countries with Russia and recommend similar punitive measures if warranted.
